Portal 2 is a puzzle game played from a first-person view. In the single-player campaign, the player controls Chell. In the cooperative campaign, the player controls one of two robots, Atlas or P-Body, or a simple humanoid icon. These three characters can look around and do things in their surroundings. Characters can take some damage, but they will die if they take too much. If the player character falls onto a solid surface, there is no penalty, but if they fall into a pit with no bottom or a toxic pool, they die right away. When Chell dies in a single-player game, the game starts over from the last checkpoint. In a cooperative game, the robot comes back soon after Chell dies, but the puzzle doesn’t have to be redone. The goal of both campaigns is to figure out how to get through the Aperture Science Laboratory, which is a complicated, changeable maze made of machines. Most of the game takes place in modular test chambers with clear entrances and exits. Other parts take place in areas behind the scenes where the goal is not as clear.
The first few levels are tutorials that show the player how to move around and how to interact with the environment. The player must solve puzzles using the “portal gun” or “Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device,” which can make two portals between two distant surfaces that look matte white, continuous, and flat. Characters can use these portals to move between rooms or “fling” things or themselves across a distance. The outlines of portals can be seen through walls and other obstacles, making them easy to find.
Thermal Discouragement Beams, which are like lasers; Excursion Funnels, which are like tractor beams; and Hard Light Bridges can all be sent through portals. Aerial Faith Plates can launch the player or an object through the air and sometimes into portals. The player must turn off turrets or move away from where they can see. The Weighted Storage Cube has been redesigned, and there are now new types: The Redirection Cubes have prismatic lenses that can redirect laser beams; spherical Edgeless Safety Cubes; an old version of the Weighted Storage Cube used in the underground levels; and a cube-turret hybrid made by Wheatley after he took control of Aperture. The heart-shaped Weighted Companion Cube shows up for a short time. Pneumatic Diversity Vents were shown in early demos as a way to move objects and transfer suction power through portals, but they won’t be in the final game. All of these game elements open locked doors, help the character get to the exit, or stop the character from getting there.
Gels that look like paint come out of pipes and can be moved through portals. They change the properties of surfaces or objects they cover. Players can use orange Propulsion Gel to move faster across surfaces, blue Repulsion Gel to bounce off of a surface, and white Conversion Gel to make surfaces accept portals. A certain surface can only be changed by one kind of gel at a time. You can’t put gel on some surfaces, like grilles. Gels can be stopped by water or washed away by water, putting the surface or object back to how it was before.
The game has a mode where two people can work together. Two players can use the same console with a split screen, or they can use two different computers or consoles. Users of Windows, Mac OS X, and PlayStation 3 can all play with each other. Both player characters are robots that have their own portal guns and can use the portals of the other character. The colors of each player’s portals are different. One is blue and purple, and the other is orange and red. The characters are kept apart in a calibration chamber so that the players can learn how to use the communication tools and portals. Most of the later chambers have less structure and require players to use both sets of portals to do things like launch lasers or funnels, change the direction of lasers or funnels, or do other things. Players can talk to each other through the game, and online players can switch to a split-screen view to help coordinate their actions. Players can “ping” to get the attention of the other player to walls or objects, start countdown timers for actions that need to happen at the same time, and do things like wave or hug together. The game keeps track of which chambers each player has finished and lets them play those chambers again with different partners.
Erik Wolpaw, who is in charge of writing for Portal 2, thinks that each campaign will take about six hours. There is commentary from the game’s developers, writers, and artists right inside the game. Once you’ve finished the game once, you can read the commentary on node icons that are spread throughout the chambers. Valve says that both the single-player and cooperative campaigns are 2–2.5 times as long as the campaigns in Portal, and that the game as a whole is 5 times as long.
